Good morning – here are your five chart for the day.
CHART 1 • Trump's Global Tariff Letters
Trump recently sent letters to 14 countries telling them exactly how much they'll pay in tariffs if they don't cut trade deals by August 1. The rates range from 25% for Japan and South Korea all the way up to 40% for Myanmar and Laos and that’s what the chart below shows. This is economic diplomacy by spreadsheet.
Look at those numbers. Cambodia faces 36% tariffs, down from the 49% Trump threatened in April. Bangladesh gets hit with 35%, also down from 37%. But some countries like Thailand stayed exactly the same at 36%. Trump is picking winners and losers based on who's been more willing to negotiate.
The letters are basically form documents with the same threatening language. "These tariffs may be modified, upward or downward, depending on our relationship with your Country. You will never be disappointed with The United States of America." It reads like a mob protection racket with better letterhead.
Trump originally promised 90 deals in 90 days back in April. He's managed to announce three actual deals so far with the UK, China, and Vietnam. So instead of negotiating with 200 countries, he's just sending letters telling them what they owe.
